Given :

Horizontal Velocity, $\rm V_x$ = 5 m/sec

Solution :

The velocity of the falling book in its trajectory is the resultant velocity. Due to the action of gravity, it keeps on increasing with time.

So,

$\rm V_R = \sqrt{V_x^2 + V_y^2}$ ----- (1)

Since the resultant velocity is equal to the horizontal velocity that is,

$\rm V_R = 5\; m/sec$

Now put the values of $\rm V_x \; and \; V_R$ in equation (1) we get,

$\rm 5 = \sqrt{5^2 + V_y^2}$

$\rm V_y = \sqrt{5^2-5^2}$

$\rm V_y = 0$

Therefore, initial vertical velocity of the book is 0.

The resultant velocity is given by relation

where

Since, the initial horizontal velocity at that instant is equal to the resultant velocity.

Vx = 5 m/s

$V_{R}$ = 5 m/s

So, on substituting in the above equation

Vy = 0 m/s

Therefore, the initial vertical velocity is equal to zero
