You are standing next to hickman hall. your friend has climbed up onto the roof and is sitting 6.00 m above you with his legs dangling over the edge. his cell phone starts ringing (he left it with you before he climbed up). you toss him his cell but you toss it way too hard. it goes straight up passing your friend reaching its highest point a full 3.00 m above where he is sitting. he then catches it on the way down. a) sketch position, velocity, and acceleration graphs for the phone while it was in flight. the graphs do not have to be numerically accurate but do need to have the correct shape. b) determine the phone’s speed the instant after it left your hand.

In an old-fashioned amusement park ride, passengers stand inside a 3.0-m-tall, 5.0-m-diameter hollow steel cylinder with their backs against the wall. the cylinder begins to rotate about a vertical axis. then the floor on which the passengers are standing suddenly drops away! if all goes well, the passengers will “stick” to the wall and not slide. clothing has a static coefficient of friction against steel in the range 0.60 to 1.0 and a kinetic coefficient in the range 0.40 to 0.70. part a what is the minimum rotational frequency, in rpm, for which the ride is safe? express your answer using two significant figures. f f = rpm

Astone is dropped from the upper observation deck of a tower, 250 m above the ground. (assume g = 9.8 m/s2.) (a) find the distance (in meters) of the stone above ground level at time t. h(t) = (b) how long does it take the stone to reach the ground? (round your answer to two decimal places.) s (c) with what velocity does it strike the ground? (round your answer to one decimal place.) m/s (d) if the stone is thrown downward with a speed of 2 m/s, how long does it take to reach the ground? (round your answer to two decimal places.) s
