a tall tower of circular cross section is reinforced by horizontal circular disks (like large coins), one meter apart and of negligible thickness. the radius of the disk at height n is 1/(ninn) (n2 4 -3 assuming that the tower is of infinite height (a) wil the total area of the disks be finite or not? hint: can you compare the (b) (c) explain why there is not a contradiction between your answers in (a) and (b) series with a simpler one? if the disks are strengthened by wires going around their circumferences like tires, wi the total length of wire required be finite or not? that is, how is it possible to start with a set of disks of finite area, remove a little strip around the circumference of each, and get an infinite total length of these strips? hint: think about units you can't compare area and length. consider two cases: (1) make the width of each strip equal to one percent of the radius of the disk from which you cut it. now the total length is infinite but what about the total area? (2) try to make the strips all the same width

You and a friend (alex) are at a a tree-top adventure park .. . part of the course requires you to climb up a rope. you both climb the same rope in the same amount of time. however, the tension in the rope is greater when alex climbs. who did the most work? alex did - more tension means more force - more force means more work was done you did - less tension means less force - less force means more work was done to find the work done, the force exerted and distance moved are multiplied. a couch is moved twice before you are happy with its placement. the same force was used to move the couch both times. if more work is done the first time it is moved, what do you know about the distance it was moved? when more work was done, the couch was moved less. when more work was done, the couch was moved further. when more work was done, the couch wasn't moved at all. when more work was done, the couch was moved the same distance.

Awater slide of length l has a vertical drop of h. abby's mass is m. an average friction force of magnitude f opposes her motion. she starts down the slide at initial speed vi. use work-energy ideas to develop an expression for her speed at the bottom of the slide. then evaluate your result using unit analysis and limiting case analysis. express your answer in terms of the variables h, m, l, vi, f and appropriate constants. vf v f
