Models of the atom have been changing based on changing scientific evidence about the structure of the atom.

The immediate predecessor of the model shown in the image attached is the  Rutherford's planetary model in which electrons are shown to be moving round the nucleus as planets move round the sun in the solar system.

However, the observation of colors of light emitted from heated atoms which had very specific energies led to the development of this model from the Rutherford's planetary model.

This model of the atom is largely due to the work of Niels Bohr hence it is called the Bohr model of the atom. Electrons are arranged in shells or energy levels, transition of electrons between energy levels led to the colors of light emitted from heated atoms.
