First step let's subtract 2 from both sides to get 3x by itself. Also remember whatever you do to one side of an equation, you must do to the other side of the equation to keep the equation in balance. So starting off we get;

3x+2-2=44-2 and this leaves us with;
3x=42

Now we have all variables on one side of equation, even if it is just one, as in this problem, that is the goal. So now we just have to get rid of that pesky 3 attached to our variable x, and we know what x equals! So last step is to divide both sides of the equation by 3 and we are left with x only on the LHS of equation, and a numerical answer on the RHS. Also remember that multiplying by the reciprocal of a fraction is the same as dividing by it. So final step is;
