4x^2 − 8x − 45 = 0
solve the equation by factoring  
= (2x - 9)(2x + 5)

set (2x - 9)(2x + 5) equal to 0 to solve for x
so
(2x - 9)(2x + 5) = 0
2x - 9 = 0
  x = 9/2
  x = 4.5

2x + 5 = 0
  x = -5/2
  x = -2.5
