YOU DON'T.Always change it to addition. If they are both negative or positive ADD. If they have different signs THEN you SUBTRACT.

If it has different signs you look at the numbers in the original equation and see which one has the larger number. then you put the negative sign or the positive sign.
EX: 368-(-578)

CHANGE: 368+(+578)
              11
SOLVE: 368                   ANSWER: 946
            +578
            
              946
