An abnormal vascular sound, called a bruit, generated by turbulent flow of blood in an artery can indicate a stenosis, i. e. partial obstruction caused by an atherosclerotic plaque. Most bruits occur only in systole and may be heard by pressing a stethoscope to the skin over the turbulent flow and listening. Suppose that a healthy carotid artery has a diameter of 8 mm and an average velocity of 0.2 m/s. The transition to turbulence occurs at Reynolds number Recritical = 2300. If the critical Reynolds number is calculated at the narrowest point of the stenosis (stenotic throat), what percentage stenosis would cause a turbulent bruit? What is the velocity at the stenotic throat? The kinematic viscosity of blood is 3.3x10-6.
