2. When you give Excel a scatter plot, it can find the line that best fits the data. How does Excel do it? It uses a method called least squares regression. Suppose that the line equation you’re looking for is y = mx + b. The goal is to find m and b which minimizes the sum of the squares of the distances between the points in the data set and the corresponding point on the line. (a) Let (x1, y1) be a point in your data set. What is the square of the distance between this point and the point on the line y = mx + b which has the same x coordinate? (Hint: Use Pythagoras)
