Read the excerpt from the story Animals in the Zoo:
(7) They arrived at the zoo right when it opened at 10:00 a. m. There were three other people in line for the BikeAbout. A small group is good, Rueben thought. That meant that the guide would have time to answer all his questions, and there would be many chances to take pictures.
(8) "Welcome to the San Francisco Zoo," the guide said as he started the tour. "My name is Preston, and I have been a zoo guide for the last seven years. I know everything about the animals here at the zoo, so feel free to ask me anything you want to know about them." Rueben's mom saw Rueben crack a huge smile. He loved asking questions and learning about all of the animals at the zoo. She figured that by this point, he would have already asked everything he wanted to know, but he always found new questions to ask.
(9) They all hopped on their bikes and rode off to their first exhibit, the African Region part of the zoo. There, they saw ostriches, giraffes, gorillas, and zebras. They also saw kudus, a type of antelope found throughout eastern and southern Africa. Preston told the group that the kudus were losing their habitat in the wild and asked if anyone knew why this was happening.
What would change if the author did not include the information in paragraph 8?
Rueben would not know that Preston loved sharing information, which would make him embarrassed to ask questions.
Rueben's mom wouldn't know that Rueben still had questions to ask, even though he had already asked a lot of questions.
The reader would not know that Rueben likes to ask questions, or that a small bike-tour group would give him lots of information.
The reader would not know that the zoo guide is experienced, and might not trust what he tells Rueben later in the passage.
