A meal consists of an appetizer, a main dish, a side dish, and a drink. There are 3 appetizer choices, 6 main dish choices, 5 side dish choices, and 4 drink choices. Describe two ways you could find the number of possible combinations. Choose one of the methods to find the answer, and explain your choice. I could use the fundamental counting principle or a tree diagram. Using the fundamental counting principle, there are (3)(6)(5)(4), or 360, possible combinations. The fundamental counting principle is a better method to use because a tree diagram for this situation would be very large.
