(1) When Margaret Hamilton graduated from college with a mathematics degree in 1958, she intended to enroll in a graduate study program in abstract mathematics, but a summer job changed that plan. (2) During the summer of 1959, Hamilton worked in the meteorology department of MIT in Boston developing software that predicted weather. (3) At this time in the development of computers, programmers learned their craft by on-the-job training with hands-on experience. (4) From there, Hamilton wrote software for a U. S. Air Force satellite tracking project. (5) Her work with the Air Force caught the attention of NASA, who was looking for a lead developer for the Apollo program flight software which would land the first man on the moon. (6) It was Hamilton's innovative software programming that ensured a safe moon landing in the last few minutes of the historic event. (7) The astronauts had mistakenly left on a radar switch which was causing all kinds of alarms to be triggered during the last minutes of the lunar descent. (8) Hamilton's program enabled the system to prioritize tasks and continue to perform the most important ones. (10) Had the computer program not detected the problem, Apollo 11 might not have had a successful landing. (11) In addition to helping make sure Apollo 11 landed on the moon, Hamilton also coined the term "software engineering."
(12) Hardware engineering was a respected discipline, but no one considered software development a science during the early Apollo missions. (13) Hamilton wanted software development to be taken as seriously as its hardware counterpart. (14) At first the term "software engineering" was considered a joke, but then a well-respected hardware engineer agreed with her in a meeting that software engineering should be considered a discipline same as hardware. (16) The rest is history! (17) Today, the job market for software engineers is growing much faster than the average of other occupations.
