"deposit" means adding to the whatever the balance is, i.e. +$170 
"write a check" means subtracting from whatever the balance is, i.e. -$59 

now... the starting balance is

now deposit of $170 is to add to the balance 
-$45 + $170 = $125 

to make things easier, you may switch the term around, 
$170 - $45 = $125
