I would say this is how you solve the problem, in the most simple way:
You don't need any info except this: 1000 individuals. Birth rate of .08 annually, and death (x_x) rate of .02, as well as these calculations should only cover one year.
Great, you got your info. We can obviously see by the numbers alone that the birth rate far exceeds the death rate, so your going to have a LOT more added to then you will have lost from the population.
Most could do this in their heads, as it's really the same as 10*8, but let's do it anyways:
1000*.08=80
1000*.02=20
Well, the answer COULD be this: The number of individuals added to the population are 80, and the number lost from the population is 20, annually.

But that doesn't quite seem to be what they want. While you CAN use that if you want, the better way would be this:
The number of individuals added each year to the population of 1000 is 60.
