How do you find the area of this composite figure?

Split the shape into smaller shapes, (see attachment)
find the area of the split shapes. So first find the area of the triangles
A = 1/2bh
A = 1/2*2*3
A = 1/2*6
A = 3
so that is the area of one triangle. the area of the other is
A = 1/2*4*3
A = 1/2 * 12
A = 6
now find the area of the rectangle
A = l*w
A = 9*3
A = 27
add them all together
27 + 6+ 3 = 36
the area of the total figure is 36
