Which strategy can be used to solve this problem?

myrna bought some pens and some binders. pens cost $2 each and binders cost $3 each. myrna spent $14 for 6 items.

how many pens did myrna buy?

a.
translate into a number sentence.
let n represent the number of pens myrna bought.
(2 × n) + (3 × 6) = 14

b.
make a table.

myrna's purchases
number 1 2 3 4 5 6
pens $2 $4 $6 $8 $10 $12
binders $3 $6 $9 $12 $15 $18

c.
guess and test.
guess that myrna bought 3 pens and 3 binders. figure out what she would have spent on the 6 items. if this doesn't equal $14, try 2 pens and 4 binders. figure out what she would have spent. is this more or less than $14? revise your guess, and test your answer again.
