something to do with the subsequent motion of the balloon after it's released.

-- the material of which the balloon is made, especially its weight,
-- the substance with which the balloon is filled, especially its density,
-- the size of the balloon, especially its volume,
-- the temperature, pressure, humidity, and density of the air around the balloon,
-- the wind speed and direction in the neighborhood of the balloon,
-- whether the balloon is pushed, or simply let go of,
-- if pushed, then the direction and speed of the push.
