How do you write expanded form to show the place value of each digit?

It's actually pretty hard to explain. I'll show you an example.

That's 400,000 + 60,000 + 1,000 + 900 + 30 + 5

For instance, if the problem asks you to write 1285 in expanded form your answer would be 1000+200+80+5. You take the different places in the number like the thousands place, the hundreds place, the tens place, and the ones place , and add up how many thousands you have,etc.
