since the two angles are the same we can set up a relationship between the two triangles and set them equal to each other and solve for X  :) , as follows

SOH   sin = Opp / Hyp

triangle 1  )   sin(Ф) = x / 12

triangle 2 )    sin(Ф) = x + 5 / 27

since sin(Ф) is the same for each triangle.. set those other sides equal to each other

x/12 = x+5 /27

now solve for x using your mad algebra skilz  :P

27 / 12 = x + 5 / x

2 3/12  = x/x  + 5/x

2 1/4 = 1 + 5/x

1 1/4 = 5/x

x = 5 / 1 1/4

x = 4   nice  :)

So BD is then

4 + 4+5

so BD = 13
