Given :  A proportional relationship between the number of pounds of potatoes (x) and the price in dollars (y) is graphed, and the ordered pair (5, 4) is on the graphed line.

To find :   price of 1 pound of potatoes

Solution:

x = number of pounds of potatoes

y = price in dollars

x         y

y  ∝  x

=> y  = kx

=> 4 = 5k

=> k = 0.8

y = 0.8x

x = 1

=> y = 0.8  

the price of 1 pound of potatoes = 0.8 $

ordered pair (10, 8) on the graph represent

that price of  10 pound of potatoes is  8 $

Part A:  one pound of potatoes would sell for .75 because in the ratio of 5,4 you buy a pound of potatoes for 3/4, then 3/4 of 1$ is 75 cents.  

Part B:  the ordered pair 10,8 does not follow the pattern rules, so it is not necessary to solve this problem, meaning it is most likely a discount or the price of something else.
