You and your family will be taking a 4-week long vacation to a tropical island. The island is so small that the residents don't use cars, but large enough that they do use other forms of transportation. There are three scooter rental companies on the island. All three companies have weekly rentals. Scooters Galore charges $50 up front and $15 per week. Speedy's charges $20 up front and $25 per week. Fun Times Rentals charges $35 up front and $20 per week. 1. Express each company’s rental as an equation where y equals the cost and x equals the
weeks.

Scooters Galore Equation: y=15x+50
Speedy’s Equation: y=25x+20
Fun Times Rentals Equation: y=20x+35
2. For how many weeks will both Scooter Galore and Fun Times Rental share the same cost?
Show your work algebraically.

15x + 50 = 20x + 35
-15x -15x
50 = 5x + 35
-35 -35
15 = 5x
15/5 = 5x/5
3 = x

3 weeks

So, for both SG and FT rentals to share the same cost 3 weeks would have to past

3. For how many weeks will both Speedy’s and Fun Time Rentals share the same cost? Show
your work algebraically.

25x+20=20x+35
-20x -20x
5x + 20 = 35
-20 -20
5x = 15
5x/5 = 15/5
x = 3

3 weeks

4. Graph both Speedy’s and Fun Time Rentals to determine when both rentals cost the same.

•Label the horizontal axis and choose an appropriate scale
•Label the vertical axis and choose an appropriate scale.

5. Write the solution and explain how the graph results match your algebraic solution.
