Consider the complex numbers t = –6 + 4i, u = –5i, w = 4, and z = 3 – 8i. On the complex plane shown, t has been plotted. Question:

A. What are the real and imaginary parts of t? Are the real part and the imaginary part real numbers or imaginary numbers? What does i represent?

B. What are the real and imaginary parts of u and w? Are u and w real numbers or imaginary numbers? What does this tell you about the relationship between real numbers, imaginary numbers, and complex numbers?

C. Plot z on a complex plane.

Here is their argument. given the obtuse angle x, we make a quadrilateral abcd with ∠dab = x, and ∠abc = 90◦, and ad = bc. say the perpendicular bisector to dc meets the perpendicular bisector to ab at p. then pa = pb and pc = pd. so the triangles pad and pbc have equal sides and are congruent. thus ∠pad = ∠pbc. but pab is isosceles, hence ∠pab = ∠pba. subtracting, gives x = ∠pad−∠pab = ∠pbc −∠pba = 90◦. this is a preposterous conclusion – just where is the mistake in the "proof" and why does the argument break down there?

Abucket of paint has spilled on a tile floor. the paint flow can be expressed with the function p(t) = 6(t), where t represents time in minutes and p represents how far the paint is spreading. the flowing paint is creating a circular pattern on the tile. the area of the pattern can be expressed as a(p) = 3.14(p)^2 part a: find the area of the circle of spilled paint as a function of time, or a[p(t)]. show your work. part b: how large is the area of spilled paint after 8 minutes? you may use 3.14 to approximate pi in this problem.
