In La Juanita by Alice Dunbar, The author uses cultural settings to influence the story in many ways. The author uses their cultural
background to describe the characters, "La Juanita, you must
know was the pride of Mandeville, The adored, the admired by all,
with her petite, half-Spanish, half French beauty." The author
mentions how she is half Spanish and half French to create
imagery for the reader. In the story she also repeats how he is
"Americain" and explains how he is different than everyone else
because of where he lived and came up. He later in the story says
he is "no longer un- Americain, now he was a hero" He said this
because he wanted to make it clear that no matter where you
come from or what you have experienced everyone is equal and
has something in common. The author uses this to show that
culture is a big part of someone's background but doesn't mean
that they don't share common things as well.
