1. Devon thinks her function machine is broken. She dropped in a number, but nothing has come
out. Devon is shaking and slapping her machine as Michael walks up. "What are you doing?"asks
Michael. "My... function... machine" Devon says, banging her function machine against the wall with
each word, "is... broken!" "How do you know it is broken?" asks Michael. "Because nothing is coming
out!"replies Devon, setting her machine down. "What did you drop in, Devon?" "First I dropped in
16, "began Devon, "and the output was 4. Then I dropped in a 9 and the output was 3. But I just
dropped in-4 and nothing is coming out, "Devon finishes. "Ah,"
says Michael. "I think your machine
is working just fine." Michael concludes.
What do you think? Does Devon have a broken function machine? If so, explain. If her machine is
not broken, explain to Devon what is going on.
