For an nth term in an arithmetic sequence

U(n) = a + ( n - 1)d

Where

a is the first term

d is the common difference

n is the number of terms

d = 5 - 2 = 3

U(n) = 2 + ( n - 1)3

= 2 + 3n - 3

= 3n - 1

b.) a = 9

d = 11 - 9 = 2

U(n) = 9 + (n - 1)2

= 9 + 2n - 2

= 7 + 2n

The nth term is 3n² - 1

For the second term we get

3(2)² - 1 = 3(4) - 1 = 12 - 1 = 11

For the fifth term we get

3(5)² - 1 = 3(25) - 1

= 75 - 1

= 74
