As a researcher, you are interested in studying the cholesterol levels using the Framingham Heart data (see attached excel file "FramHeartStudy_wobese_data"). The research question of interest is to see if the cholesterol level is associated to the smoking status. This question can also be asked more specifically, i. e. if the total cholesterol levels are the same between current smokers and current non- smokers. Statistically, the question is converted into a hypothesis (HT), that is, if the population means of total cholesterol level are the same between current smokers and non-smokers. 1. What is the degree of freedom for a two-sample t test? 2. What is the T score for your hypothesis testing? (hint, use sample means, pooled standard deviation and sample size) 3. What is the p-value of the hypothesis testing using a two sample t test (or called two independent t test)? 4. What is the conclusion to your HT? (hint, use the p-value to make the conclusion) 5. Now, how will you answer your research question using the p-value or the conclusion from the HT? 6. Supposing the total cholesterol level is not normally distributed, what is the alternative statistical test you would consider to answer this research question? 7. What is the p-value from the alternative test? 8. Do you still have the same conclusion from the alternative test as you had from the previous two sample t test?
