A baseball diamond is a square with 90 feet in between each base. The pitcher’s mound is located on
a direct line between home plate and second base and is 60.5 feet from home plate. During a pivotal
play, the pitcher throws the ball to his teammate standing at first base at a speed of 132 feet per
second in an attempt to get a runner out. The runner speeds back to the base in 0.6 second. Is the
runner safe or out? Explain your reasoning. Use the equation for distance, d = rt, where d is distance,
r is speed, and t is time. (Note: A runner is safe if he gets back to the base before the ball arrives. He is
out if the ball is caught at the base before he returns.)
