A scholar is studying the extent to which people hold egalitarian beliefs. She obtains measurements on a large random sample of U. S. adults. Each respondent is measured along an egalitarianism scale that runs from a raw score of 0 (low egalitarianism) to a raw score of 24 (high egalitarianism). A computer analysis reveals that the mean is equal to 14, with a standard deviation equal to 5.

A. This chapter discussed how to convert a raw value, such as a score on the egalitarianism scale, into a Z score. A Z score is obtained by dividing the raw value’s deviation from the mean by a standard unit. The standard deviation is a standard unit that can be used to convert deviations from the mean into Z scores. Obtain Z scores for each of the following raw egalitarianism scores: 5, 9, 14, 16, and 19.

B. The scholar wants to collapse the scale into four ordinal categories: low egalitarianism, assigned to respondents with Z scores of less than ?1; medium-low egalitarianism, assigned to respondents with Z scores in the range between ?1 through 0; medium-high egalitarianism, for Z scores of greater than 0 through +1; and high egalitarianism, assigned to respondents with Z scores of greater than +1. What are the raw-score ranges for each of the four ordinal categories?
