To solve for an unknown variable, you want to isolate the variable on one side of the equation (or = (equals) mark). In this case, I would subtract both sides by 2y, therefore eliminating it from the right side (2y-2y=0), and making 6y, 4y (6y-2y=4y).

You now have the equation 4y-20= -4

To isolate the y you need to "move" the 20 to the right side of the equation by adding both sides by 20. This leaves you with 4y (-20+20=0) on the left and 16 (-4+20=16) on the right.

You now have the equation 4y=16
