1.1. kalvin always has cereal for breakfast. he likes cocoa blast cereal, but his mother wants him to eat heath nut flakes at least some mornings.
kalvin and his mother agree to leave the cereal problem to chance. each morning kalvin tosses a coin. if the coin lands on heads, he will have cocoa blast. if the coin lands on tails, he will have heath nut flakes.
1.2. kalvin wants to find something else to toss that will give him a better chance of eating his favorite cereal each morning. he wonders if a paper cup would be a good thing to toss.
because kalvin wants to eat cocoa blast more of the time, he needs to determine if the cup lands in one position more often than another. if so, he will ask to toss a paper cup instead of a coin.
1. kalvin tosses a paper cup once a day for a year to determine his breakfast cereal. use your results from problem 1.2 to determine the following.
a. how many times do you expect the cup to land on its side? on one of its ends?
b. how many times do you expect kalvin to eat cocoa blast in a month? in a year? explain.
the cup lands on its side 80%(0.8) of the time, while it lands on its edges 20%(0.2) of the time, heads on a coin would be equal to the cup landing on its side, and landing on its edges would be equal to a coin landing on tails.
