In our world, there are two different things that people have when they purchase things. they have wants, and needs. wants are things that are wanted and are not needed for survival. so a vacation to the caribbean is definitely a want, especially in the middle of winter! conversely, some of the things we buy are needs. when you purchase a jacket, or are given a jacket for the winter, that constitutes a need. you need a jacket in the winter in order to survive the harsh weather. additionally food, shelter, and heat are other examples of needs. needs are obviously more important than wants. needs must be taken care of before any wants can be met. when it comes to our lives as citizens, there is one thing that we need in order to be effective citizens, and that is the freedom to express ourselves in any way we choose. luckily, due to the need for an effective government, and the theory of natural law, the constitution protects our rights as citizens to freely express ourselves in the first amendment. just as we have needs to survive, we have needs to be effective citizens, which is provided by the 1st amendment. in this lesson, we will examine why freedom of expression is necessary. quick write: list one want that you have and one need that you have
