Lets say you have the improper fraction 16/5. you can convert this fraction into a mixed number by dividing 15/5 and then add the 1 to the fraction. For example:

3 & 1/5.

Mixed number to a improper fraction:

Lets say you have 3 & 1/5. you first multiply 3 by the denominator, and then add the number with the numerator and then put the number on top of the denominator. For example:

3 * 5 = 15 + 1 = 16/5

If you have 3 and 3/4 as a mixed number, you will first multiple your whole number (3) by the number in the denominator (4) which gives you 12. Next you will add the 12 to the number in the numerator (3), which will give you 15. Your denominator will always remain the same, so your improper fraction will be 15/4.

Improper Fractions to Mixed numbers

If you have 17/6 as an improper fraction, you have to divide to change it to a mixed number. The 6 will become your divisor (The number on the outside of the division symbol) and the 17 becomes your dividend(the number on the inside of the division symbol).  6 will go into 17, 2 times. 2 X 6 = 12. Now subtract 12 from 17 which gives you 5. Your mixed number is 2 and 5/6.
