In Unit 2, we have learned of various government, law, and public service careers that all help make our world a better place. Why did Melvin Russell choose to become a police officer? What do you think he means when he says, “…it has always been a calling for me, never a job.” 2. Russell states that he has been through good times and bad over the years of being a police officer, but that he still loves the job. What aspect of being a police officer caused him to almost retire? What outside factors might impact the amount of racism and discrimination that police officers deal with?

3. Russell was determined to make a big change in the thought process behind police officer roles in communities. What were some of the first steps he took to achieve this change?

4. Russell touches on the roles of police officers in a community and how police officers should not be called for every little issue that arises. What are some examples of these issues that he gives and who does he feel should be handling these issues rather than law enforcement?
