Desde la fundación de las Naciones Unidas, la igualdad entre hombres

y mujeres figura entre las garantías más fundamentales de los derechos

humanos. La Carta de las Naciones Unidas, aprobada en 1945,

establece entre sus objetivos el de “reafirmar la fe en los derechos

fundamentales del hombre, en la dignidad y el valor de la persona

humana [y] en la igualdad de derechos de hombres y mujeres”. Además,

en el Artículo 1 de la Carta se estipula que uno de los propósitos de las

Naciones Unidas es el de fomentar el respeto de los derechos humanos

y las libertades fundamentales “sin hacer distinción por motivos de raza,

sexo, idioma o religión”. La prohibición de la discriminación por motivos

de sexo se reitera en sus Artículos 13 (mandato de la Asamblea General)

y 55 (promoción de los derechos humanos universales).
