Samuel Gompers was a British-born American cigar maker who later became a trade union leader and an important figure in American labor history. Samuel Gompers became chairman of the Cigarmaker’s Union. Gompers has served as president of the CMIU 144 since the federation was established. Samuel Gompers became one of the founders of the American Federation of Labor in 1886 and led the AFL from 1886-1924.

But then Gompers supported the nomination of president William Jennings Bryan who captured the message of the labor movement launched by Gompers. Then, followed by Woodrow Wilson's victory in 1912, led to the creation of a United States cabinet which sided with labor in 1913, one of which was marked by the emergence of a Clayton Anti-Trust action in 1914, which was part of the Adamson Act 1916, which proposed eight hours of the workday.
