IMF - The International Monetary Fund

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) was established in 1945. There was a strong desire at the time of the founding to build economic cooperation between nations so that a rampant devaluing of national currencies such as what happened during the Great Depression would not happen again.  According to the organization's own statements, the primary purpose of the IMF is to "ensure the stability of the international monetary system."   Also, according to the IMF, if a country is in deep financial danger and can't pay its bills owed to other nations or creditors, that could cause serious problems for the whole international financial system.  Thus the IMF works to provide loans in such situations and works to stabilize such nations' economies.
