What do you think was the most difficult part of moving west for settlers? explain your reasoning

Settlers had to leave everything and everyone they knew to travel west. The over land route was long and hard. The trails were unpredictable. They often stopped and built homes and planted crops that they would never harvest. The fear of diseases like pox were everywhere. They also had the fear of Native attacks. They were uninvited guests in a land that threatened the native culture. Weather was also a factor. Flash floods in the plains or snowed in passes (think Donner Party) could kill. The lack of basic medicine knowledge meant a small scratch could get infected and kill you. If surgery was needed, that could kill you too. If you survived the initial surgery, you still had to worry about the possibility of infection.
