Why did the presidential election of 1876 signal the end of reconstruction?

The Republicans compromised to quietly give up their fight for racial equality and blacks' rights in the south. Hayes withdrew the last federal troops in the south in 1877; the bayonet- backed Republican gonvernments collalpsed, thereby ending Reconstruction.
