Betrayal

Actually, betrayal continues to be a dominant theme throughout the whole story of Macbeth, and instances of such begin already in Act 1.  Thane of Cawdor, described as “that most disloyal traitor, betrays Scotland and fights on the side of Norway. He is captured and put to death, and his title is given to Macbeth. But Macbeth later will become a betrayer himself, against his king, Duncan.  Macbeth (in Act 1) is told by witches that he will be “King hereafter," and that sets in motion his own plotting against Duncan.
