Niccolo Machiavelli was an Italian Renaissance historian, politician, diplomat, philosopher, humanist and writer. His best-known work was book "The Prince", in which he described the ways that unscrupulous politicians rule. He is considered to be a prototype of a modern empirical scientist, because he practiced empiricism and realism instead of idealism. He didn't write about how the ruler should behave, but how successful and powerful rulers do behave in the real world.
