The capital was built in Kumbi Saleh on the edge of the Sahara. Most of the houses were made of wood and clay, but the upper class lived in stone and wooden houses. The larger section was called El-Ghaba and was protected by a stone wall inside which was the political and religious center. There they were the imperial palace and the forests of sacred trees used in the religious rituals of the soninke. A mosque was then built for Muslim officials. The other section of the city was the commercial one, populated by numerous Arab and Berber merchants who built a dozen mosques. The Ghanas tolerated the spread of Islam but never converted, as it did with the Takrur rulers in what is now Senegal.
