The criticism was based around the idea that he's a person who's not from the area and who just came there to cause trouble among the African-American population and to change the way things were being done in Birmingham. This is something that the people in power in Birmingham disliked since they wanted to stick to their ways.

His response was that he believed that the people who criticized him were genuinely not bad people and that they deserve an answer in which he said that he was invited to Birmingham as a person who  fights for equality and democracy and it was thus his duty to make sure that equality can be found everywhere.
