European art of Medieval times varied significantly from one place to another. However, there are some characteristics that art of this time period usually exhibited, regardless of location.

The art of this time period originated from Roman traditions. Therefore, it reflected some artistic heritage from this culture. It also showed evidence of "barbarian" cultures, which were those that originated in Northern Europe. Most art appeared in small items which we now consider as "minor art," such as furniture, embroidery and tapestry (as opposed to painting, sculpture or architecture).

Medieval art was mostly based on two broad subjects. The first one was Christianity. Much of the art of this time period was religious in nature and reflected the development of the Catholic Church. The second broad topic was that of chivalry. Subjects such as knights, princesses and fantastical creatures such as dragons were often present in art, particularly in literature.
