During the tenth century, the Czech people had their capital, Prague, populated with settlements of Slavic tribes. Soon these tribes acquired control of the passage through the river Moldava (Vitava). From the following century, the settlements had already acquired a city aspect due to the strategic position and the development was fast.  The surroundings of the current Staré Mesto (Old Town), started to receive new settlements like Malá Strana (Small Town) and Josefov (Jewish Quarter).

In the following centuries the city became the residence of the kings of Bohemia and later the seat of the court of the Holy Roman Empire.

Later, Prague came under the rule of the Habsburg Empire when it developed culturally. From the 16th century and for many years the city was rebuilt, decorated and embellished by its architects and artists.
