Economically, many blacks in the south continued to suffer as tenant farming became entrenched way of life and there was increase in educational opportunities.

After the civil war ended in the United States in the year 1865, The state legislatures of the Southern part started to enact black codes in order to restrict the rights of the Freedmen and maintenance of the plantation system.

During the period of Reconstruction, There were around 2000 African-Americans who had government jobs. There was a majority of people from the African American community who used to live in desperate rural poverty across the South post-civil war. They were denied of education under slavery. Family, Church, and School were the major centers of African Americans after slavery. Black churches were not only the place for worship but they also became the centers of learning and socializing.  

The Republicans who used to have control over Congress during that time responded to this by passing three post-war constitutional amendments and these amendments were made to abolish slavery, Providing equal protections to the freed blacks and gave African-Americans the right to vote to which they were denied earlier.
