The initial definition of common law was present in the Black’s law dictionary and it said that the common law is a law which is derived from the judicial decisions and not from the statuses or the constitutions. The common law vanishes the authority which publicized a law. For instance, In jurisdictions that fall under the territory of Anglo-American territory, the law there includes a ‘Statutory law’ which is enacted by the legislature or a delegated legislation by the executive branch.  

There are two types of common laws. One is General common law and another is interstitial common law. General common law arises from the traditional authority of the courts in order to define what law is even in the absence of underlying regulation whereas in Interstitial common law court decisions interpret and determines the boundaries in the law which is spread by other bodies. Most of the decisions in the common law jurisdictions are precedents and some of them went on to become landmark decisions.
