More and more Americans had cars, appliances, radios, telephones, and others. The level of well-being and wealth of the general population was getting higher and higher.

Despite appearances, American prosperity was fragile, precarious, and misleading because it was encouraged and stimulated by advertising and often resorted to credit purchases.
