The practice which places citizens under absolute state control is totalitarianism. Totalitarianism is defined as "a political system where the state recognizes no limits to its authority and strives to regulate every aspect of public and private life wherever feasible." Totalitaranism regimes often stay in power due to propaganda, a single-party system, restriction of speech, mass surveillance and widespread use of terror.
