There are 8 stages for a successful presidential campaign:

1) The Candidate must first announce that he is going to run for president.

2) The Candidate must then campaign against other candidates in their own party. They do this because they must win the primary election.

3) Primary election. Democrats vote for a Democrat; Republicans vote for a Republican.

4) At this point the party conventions occur. Each party has a week long convention to announce both their President and their Vice President nominee.

5) Campaign. The candidates must campaign against all other candidates of other political parties to win votes in the general election.

6) Next is the general election. The people vote for the President/Vice President they want. They don't actually choose the president though. They only vote to tell the electors who they want.

7) The electoral college votes. This is where the president is actually chosen. Normally the elector choses the candidates that the state they represent wants.

8) Finally, the inauguration of the new President occurs. This always happens on January 20th. The President is sworn into office that day.
