Describe the important change in the constitution that was prompted by the results of the election of 1800

The Twelfth Amendment, which was added to the Constitution nearly four years after the election of 1800. In essence, this amendment specified that henceforth members of the Electoral College needed to vote separately for a President and a Vice President, as opposed to the original specifications of the Constitution whereby someone became vice president merely by being the runner-up in vote-getting for President, even if that person was of a different political party from the winner of the election. The results of the 1800 election prompted the adoption of his amendment since incumbent President John Adams and Thomas Jefferson ended up with the same number of electoral votes, and thus the House of Representatives was given the task under the Constitution of deciding the outcome. This led to considerable rancor and acrimony at a time when there were already contentious political divisions in the new country and Jefferson was finally elected President after some political maneuvering that many saw as a questionable resulting in not Adams but Aaron Burr being chosen as Vice President, and the Twelfth Amendment was subsequently adopted to try to avert such controversies in the future.
